Thank you for your letter of 18 June about
the significance of the activities of the New Left.

I am in touch with the Special Branch so that we get an accurate and up-to-date assessment of their activities. In brief, the New Left amounts to very little (perhaps a dozen young people) and they cause scarcely a ripple on the Hong Kong water. shall answer your letter fully in due course but may I commend to you, if you have not already read it, Raymond Yau's article on page 25 of the Far Eastern Economic Review No.22 of May 18 this year. His article brings out what a small, disorganised and somewhat "cranky" lot they are.
However, like many of these groups they do create much more trouble and disturbance than they are intrinsically worth.
