Reference A /R/1.dated 7 October 1975. (Not to all).

I wrote to you at Reference A. about an operation in the

S Shan States from 14-26 Septemba, which the Burma Anay coveted out against the Shan United Revolutionary Army (SURA) and the Chines Irregular Forces (CIP), sir, the 6 drus surveillance Bell helicopters recently arrived from the United States. I attach an article from the Working People's Deg of 15 October and a lending article from the same paper of the following day. The more important places, wurred on the nd are listed at Annex A With their grid ferences.

can confien some, and probably all, the helicopter war used, that the Americans were all leased at the way the operation was handled and that puch restrictions which

ve been placed on their use were sorupulously observed. 46 shon have token so long for news of the operation un near in the newspapers is not known, but it has been suggested that the report was deliberately delayed to coincide with the arrival of a senior American Admiral on a private, visit to Rangoon, in the hope that Boem would receive worldwide coverage for her efforts against drug traffickers. Another oddity is that about. two thirds of the report toen? not refer to the September operation at all, but to two earlier ones in April 1974 an? June of this year.

igniCicant Facts.

The SURA and CIF insurgents were forewarned of an Impending attack and it seems that most of them slipped awaysthrough & cordon which the Burnu Acny, hiul placed along the, Salween, river. Some 300 gallant of: mor, hine bise word dentaoyed, but thin ignan N, Kmall amoniul when compo coil w
