2031. Education Allowances

(a) Local education allowances may be claimed by an officer posted

to an overseas office if his children continue to be educated in Hong Kong, provided the usual criteria are met;

(b) Overseas education allowances, togehter with school passages, may be claimed by an officer posted to the United Kingdom provided the usual criteria are met. Individual arrangements will be made by the Secretary for the Civil Service for the grant of education allowances to officers posted to other overseas offices.

2032. Medical Expenses

(a) An officer and his family posted to the United Kingdom are

entitled to medical and dental treatment under the National Health Service. Reimbursement for private medical and dental treatment will not normally be made. However, exceptionally, the Hong Kong Commissioner in London may personally authorise partial reimbursement of medical and dental charges for private treatment where he is satisfied, upon the advice of the Consulting Physician of the Ministry of Overseas Develop- ment or other competeat medical or dental authority, that immediate treatment was necessary and that such treatment was not available or not readily available under the National Health Service. In this context, partial reimbursement means the total fees paid less the amount the officer would have been called upon to pay had the treatment been provided by the Government in Hong Kong.

(b) An officer posted to an overseas office other than the United Kingdom will be eligible for the same medical benefits as are applicable to British Embassy or High Commission staff, as appropriate, in that country.
