UN REGIONAL NARCOTICS CO-ORDINATION OFFICER, SOUTH EAST ASIA
You will have seen from the Division of Narcotic Drugs' letter G/SO 412/421 of 2 April (copied to you) that the Division propose to appoint Mr A H H Perera, a Ceylonese, to the new UN Post of Regional Narcotics Co-ordination officer, South East Asia, and that they seek the Hong Kong authorities' acceptance of the appoint- ment by 28 April.
From Mr Perera's curriculum vitae it looks as if he has the right type of background. Chris Train in the Home Office has told me that he does not know Mr Perera personally or is aware of his performance as Deputy Commissioner of Excise in Sri Lanka. However he adds that the main concern is to get a seemingly good candidate appointed to the job as the UN had already delayed over this matter for nearly two years.
