STATE OF PLAY ON POSSIBLE COUNTRIES OF RESETTLEMENT

THE UNITED STATES are still stone-walling but the State Department has said that they are doing their best (serial 136).

AUSTRALIA has sent a four-man immigration team to Hong Kong but the Australians are unlikely to take many Vietnamese refugees from there (serial 160).

THE FRG is in favour of taking Vietnamese refugees but the final decision on admission rests with the Länder. 71 refugees in Hong Kong have expressed interest in going to the FRG.

TUNISIA will apparently take at least three of the Hong Kong refugees (serials 131, 148, 149).

DENMARK will take up to 100 Vietnamese refugees, and possibly a few more. They have so informed the UNHCR and have said that they would prefer to take their refugees from those now in Hong Kong (serials 133 and 134) Hong Kong and Copenhagen are in direct contact over the matter (serial 161).

SWEDEN does not wish to take any more Vietnamese refugees.

NEW ZEALAND will take up to 50 families of Vietnamese refugees; but it seems likely that any of Hong Kong will be subsumed in the above total.

THE NETHERLANDS think they will be unable to help over the refugees.

ITALY will take Vietnamese refugees only if they have a sponsor or close relatives in Italy.
