Thank you for your letter of 2 July about Vietnamese refugees. I am sorry that you have been in hospital and hope it is not something nasty that you picked up in Jakarta.

I am leaving for Athens tomorrow night and after a few days there staying with John Denson, will be in Scotland and Kent for my hols. I will hopefully be in touch with you between 7 August and the end of the month.

The refugee problem is looking a bit better now. By the end of this week we shall have resettled 1,000. The Americans are beginning tomorrow to remove 43 to the States and are hopeful that a more massive effort will start shortly afterwards. They are even talking helpfully about lending a hand with the ultimate residue.

I think that Ivor Jackson is good news. You will have seen the report that we sent for him to his headquarters in Geneva, which includes some comments about the prospects of voluntary repatriation. My guess is that very few will leave from here for South Vietnam until they have had some kind of personal reassurance from relatives and friends there or from some of the group from the United States who are reported to be thinking of going back.

I look forward to seeing you in August.
ever,
Yours
