YOUR TELEGRAM No. 397 TO HONG KONG: VIETNAMESE REFUGEES

We asked Foreign Ministry today if Netherlands Government had considered whether they could take any Vietnamese refugees

from Hong Kong.

2.

Head of South Asian Department said that Foreign Ministry had received a report from their Embassy at London about this problem. Their preliminary reaction was that Netherlands Government were unlikely to be able to help. They already had enough problems with minorities in the Netherlands; Te Flierhaar mentioned

Surinamers and South Moluccans in particular. They were not keen to take others. Netherlands Government would, of course, consider any formal request from British Government. But

Te Flierhaar thought it unlikely that they would change their minds.
