stall at the mouth of this service lane several persons rushed out of the lane and pushed him to the ground. He stated that in the confusion he thought that they wanted to rob him so he put up resistance and one of them stabbed him once in his left thigh with a hard object. That his assailants then ran away, and as he was afraid that some of his assailants were still in the vicinity he

ran away as well and that he later ran to a lorry in Reclamation

Street where he lost consciousness. That when he regained

consciousness he saw police in the vicinity and he told them that he had been robbed and injured and requested that he be sent to hospital. The statement was in fact a completely exculpatory statement, but at the time that the prisoner made this statement he knew nothing of the trail of blood which was of the same group as his own which commenced outside the back door of the restaurant and led eventually to Reclamation Street. According to the prisoner he was attacked and robbed at the mouth of the service lane in Bute Street, after which he ran to Reclamation Street. However, the trail of blood commenced

outside the rear door of the restaurant which was some 200 feet

up the service lane from its mouth in Bute Street where the prisoner said he had been attacked and wounded. In the light of this the prisoner had to try to explain, among other things, how this trail of blood had commenced outside the back door of the

restaurant and not at the mouth of the service lane in Bute Street. This he proceeded to try and do when he gave evidence in his own defence. He agreed that he had been attacked in Bute Street and he said that his assailants pushed him along Bute Street into the service lane where he was robbed of his wallet. Ho said that he had succeeded in freeing himself from these assailants and that he had then run down the service lane as fast as he could and as

he ran, he shouted out "Save life." He said that he did not kno w

whether his attackers followed him down this service lane or not. He said that as he was running down this lane a door suddenly opened out into the lane and he saw people run out of this door. He said that there were at least two or three but he did not see how many, but he noticed that as they came out of this door they
