A. GENERAL INFORMATION

3

The Prisoner was born in Hong Kong. His parents came from Kwongtung, China but he was brought up in Lantao, Hong Kong His mother died when he was only a baby. His father was re- married after his mother had died. His father was by trade a seaman but retired at an early age from seafaring afterwards because of poor health. His step-mother had then become the sole breadwinner of the family. She supported the family by. collecting wood from the hillside for sale. When as a student he was said to be rather lazy in doing his school work. The step-mother would like him to have more schooling though she could not afford to support him to do so. They were far from being able to live comfortably. His father seldom punished him ̧ while his step-mother treated him as though he were her own son. By and large he was able to get on well with his parents and sisters as well.

When he got older he went to work in Kowloon for a living. Most of the time, he worked in theatre and teahouse as attendant and used to board at the place of work. He seldom returned home except on holidays or when unemployed. To the best knowledge of his family, he was not a cause for concern to those that knew him. He had friends but his parents were not certain they were good or bad. They had little knowledge of his outside activities and behaviour
