The Prisoner was born in his native county of Hoi Ping. He came to the Colony with his paternal grandmother at the age of seven to join his family. He was then provided with formal education until he completed primary school in 1963. His academic performance, according to his father, was underaverage. Both for financial and interest reasons, the Prisoner had not continued with schooling. first job he had lasted from 1963-1967, and was in fact taken with his father who was a skilled hand in the manufacturing of woollen garments.

He broke away from his father when the family moved from their former residence in Li Cheng Uk Village to the present Low- Cost Housing Estate in Hunghom and had found himself jobs in other woollen garment factories. He had occasionally engaged in other kinds of factory jobs, such as plastic work and the making of watch-covers, but just for brief periods. Since 1970, however, the Prisoner had given up factory employments and had taken up hawking instead.
The Prisoner used to live with his family before he took up hawking. But it was said that due to a widening gap between himself and his father, the Prisoner gradually became more isolated from the family. He had stayed elsewhere for about five months by himself. He was said to have contributed almost nothing to the family during the last 3+ years but neither had he taken anything away.
As a football-fan, the Prisoner disclosed that he came to know the others in the same case of offences in a football ground in Shumshuipo. He admitted further that he was indulged in street-side gambling and. that he had been desperate to get money to pay his gambling debts.
