The Prisoner was brought up in a large and poor family with his late father formerly a labourer with a Hong Kong Government Department. He was the youngest among six siblings. Both parents were illiterate. The family was living at the Hing Wah Resettlement Area in Chai Wan before they were offered with low cost housing at their present address in Valley Road Estate. The Prisoner had studied up to primary six standard and became uninterested to continue his studies. At that time his father passed away, so he decided to take up a job to lessen the burden of his mother and elder brothers. His academic performance, according to his mother, was fair only, so she had not insisted on him to continue his schooling.

The Prisoner was very unsteady at work and he drifted here and there for several years without acquiring any skill for himself. At first, he worked as an odd job labourer with various factories and later he followed his elder brother, Kam-wah, to work at various saw-mills on casual basis. the year before the offence, he was virtually unemployed except occasionally giving a helping hand to his elder brother, Kam- tong, in doing decoration and painting work. For most of his time, he was just either idling around or seeking pleasure with his elder brothers and associates at night-clubs, bowling centres, massage parlours, ball-rooms or casino in Macau.
