At 8.50 a.m. on 14 August 1973, 4 men hailed a pak

At about 11.10 that morning, 8 men entered the Branch of the Chartered Bank at the corner of Cheung Wah Street and Un Chau Street. 6 of them were wearing hoods and 2 were wearing forage caps. 4 of the men carried guns and 2 carried knives. In the Bank, one of the men snatched the revolver from a security guard after the lanyard had been cut with a knife. The guard was hit on the head and neck and became unconscious. When revolver and another security guard had his revolver stolen. the men left the Bank, taking with them just over $462,000, they forced 3 female staff members to accompany them. Two of the girls were released outside the Bank but one was forced to get into the car which had been stolen earlier. At the time the men were coming out of the Bank, a Securicor van was parked near the entrance. Two men in the van were forced at gunpoint to get out and one who was slow in alighting from the van was hit on the head and also lost consciousness.

The stolen car, with the 7 men and the female hostage aboard, was driven into Cheung Sha Wan Road, where it mounted the pavement, and later collided with a bus at the junction of Tonkin Street. No. 4 was identified by the bus driver as the driver of the car. Immediately after the collision, the men got
out of the car and the girl escaped.

The collision was seen by police officers travelling in a police vehicle and they chased after the men running along Tonkin Street. The driver of the Police vehicle identified No. 4 as one of the men. After travelling a short distance, the driver saw two of the men draw guns and point them at the vehicle. He stopped it and he and his companions crouched down. None of the police officers heard a shot, but the driver of the bus
