There is nothing in the subject matter of this correspondence or in the terms in which you conduct it to

induce facetiousness: My letter of the 16th February contained nothing facetious. I sought in a mild way to point out to you that one of your questions was founded on a false premise; and I did so by saying it was in the category of the well-known "Have you stopped beating your wife ?" type of question.

In the last paragraph of your letter you enquire whether I would treat this matter as less of a joke if the girl were my daughter or even if she vere of my ova race.

I do not think that any comment is called for on this singularly unpleasant insinuation.
