9. We have been at pains to insist that the future arrangement

for the operation of the service radar has nothing to do with, and is quite separate from, the discussion about the Hong Kong defence budget. Nevertheless CBFHK has strongly urged that at a time when

we are both reducing our service to the HKG and demanding from them

a much higher contribution towards costs we should do all we can

to accommodate the HKG's request.

Recommendation

10.

Your agreement is therefore sought to the RAP continuing

to man the radar installation at Tai Mo Shan on a winimum staff

basis for the period up until the end of March 1978 subject to the

Hong kong Government reimbursing the RAF for the full cost thereof. Any agreement with the Hon Kong Government will also be subject to continued availability of spares from USAF and to their proceeding

as quickly as possible with the installation or a new ATC radar at

Kai Tak,
