Dear Bruce
CLOSURE OF 117 SU HONG KONG AND CONTINUED PROVISION OF ATC FACILITIES AT KAI TAK
You will wish to see the latest developments in the case of the search radar at Tai Mo Shan. Briefly, we have been unable to find a solution to the problem of providing spares to enable Cable and Wireless Ltd to maintain the installation after April 76. Subject to the agreement of AMP and VCAS we therefore propose to soldier on until March 78.
I attach for your information copies of an exchange of signals I have had with CRAF HK which have cleared the way to our making a submission to the Air Staff at board level for their agreement to the line we are now recommending. I also attach a first draft of the paper which will be going up the line. If you have any observations on this I should of course be glad to receive them.
There does not seem to be any immediate need to take the subject further on your side since we hope to be in a position to make a firm decision within the next couple of weeks. CRAF HK obviously knows which way the wind is blowing and may well have kept your people informed; but I think it would be a mistake to tell the HKG that it was all over bar the shouting.
