Is Diego Garcia not being made into a nuclear base?
No. The function of the facility will be to provide communications and limited logistic support for ships and aircraft in the area. There are no plans to construct any specialised support facilities on Diego Garcia for nuclear powered or nuclear carrying vessels or aircraft [If pressed). No nuclear weapons would be stored on Diego Garcia without appropriate consultations with HMG.
How will the UK be able to intervene quickly
in the Caribbean if the two frigates are withdrawn?
Deployment from our NATO forces in the East Atlantic will still enable us to intervene should the situation require it.
I should be grateful for comments or clearance by close of play tomorrow Friday 7 March.
