OPTION 'C'
53. This would cost £35M per annum and comprise:
Frigate
1 x UK battalion
3 x Gurkha battalions
1 x Gurkha Engineer field squadron (with a separate
8 Wessex helicopters
and either:
training wing)
1 x UK artillery battery as a first preference because of the smaller infantry force under this option.
or
3 patrol craft, as wasting assets until 1982.
54. This option meets the requirement to report on a garrison costing £35M. It has, however, a shortfall of one battalion against the security yardstick. The implications of this would be very similar to those of Option 'A', except that the battery would reduce the shortfall in the teeth arm units by the equivalent of a strong infantry company, of 160 men, in the IS role. If the battery were selected, the naval drawbacks would be the same as for Option 'A'.
OPTION 'D'
55.
This would cost £371M per annum and comprises:
Frigate
1 x UK battalion
4 x Gurkha battalions
1 x Gurkha Engineer field squadron (with a separate
8 Wessex helicopters
training wing)
