HM Ships have contributed on a major scale to the principal

maritime exercises of the Central Treaty Organisation (CTO)

and South Fast Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO), and have trained

whenever possible with the navies of countries visited. The

Royal Marines have taken part in minor exercises in various parts

of the world, including Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, the Falkland Islands,

France, Gibraltar, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Malta, Netherlands,

the Netherland Antilles, Norway, Puerto Pico, Sardinia and Turkey.

Army units have exercised in Australia, Belgium, Belize, Bermuda,

the British Solomon Islands, Brunei, Canada, the Caribbean, Corsica,

Cyprus, Ethiopia, France, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kenya,

Malawi, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates.

Royal Air Force aircraft from home and overseas stations practised

regular deployments to the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf and the

Far East. Within CENTO, aircraft of the NEAF participated in major

air defence and maritime air exercises in the Persian Gulf area.

A Royal Air Force Hercules and a Mountain Rescue Team took part in

the annual CENTO Search and Rescue Exercise, NEJAT, which in 1974

took place in Iran.

n. In 1974, the United Kingdom was the host for

Exercise NISHAN, the annual CFNTO small arms competition. British

Servicemen also took part in security development exercises and

projects sponsored by SEATO.
