is being developed for the Army which will be capable of engaging
enemy armour with guided weapons; it will also be used for casualty
evacuation, as an airborne command post, and for the rapid movement
of men and supplies.
Hawk
15. The HS 1182, now named the Hawk, is in full development, and
made its first flight successfully last summer. It will be used to
train pilots to fly fast jet aircraft, and will replace the Gnat
and the Hunter. A particular feature of the Hawk, as a two-seat
trainer, will be excellent all-round visibility from the rear seat.
It will be the first British-designed military aircraft to be built
to metric standards, and will be powered by a non-re-heat version of
the Adour engine used in the Jaguar.
Maritime Harrier
16. The project definition study of a maritime version of the
Harrier has been completed. Decision on full development to be
inserted when made at the end of the Defence Review 7.
Nimrod
17. Developments of major modifications to the Nimrod maritime
patrol aircraft's avionic systems are in progress. The modifications
are designed to accommodate equipment capable of improved methods
of detecting, shadowing and attacking submarines and surface vessels.
Sea King Replacement
18.
Studies have begun on a replacement for the Sea King anti-
submarine helicopter_7.
New Airborne Early Warning System
19. The provision of a new airborne early warning system in the
