47.
There is a continuing programme for the improvement of living
accommodation for single men and for the provision of quarters for
the increasing numbers of married men. In the United Kingdom, about
2,000 married quarters will be started and the improvement of older
married quarter estates will continue. The increasing number of
Service dependants in Germany has created a need for additional
school places and NAAFI families' shops, which are being provided
as quickly as resources permit.
HIRINGS
48.
Hiring married quarters for all the Services will cost about
£31 million in 1975-76. Most of this expenditure takes place in
Germany, where the number of hirings is expected to reach some
25,000 by the end of 1975-76 compared with 21,300 at the start of
1974-75.
MOVEMENTS
49. The movement of military units to and from Northern Ireland, in
Royal Air Force aircraft and by military and civil shipping, continues
to be a major task.
50. There has been an increase in the movement of TAVR units and
individuals for their overseas training, and in the sea movement of
cargo to the training area at Suffield in Canada.
52.
51. At the end of 1973, the Royal Air Force conducted Operation LUCAN,
transferring about 30,000 refugees between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The fuel crisis at the end of 1973 led to the introduction of
immediate economy measures, including the pruning of scheduled
services and severe reductions in airborne exercises; continuing
economies are being made wherever possible.
53.
The recent Cyprus emergency created a sizeable movements task.
