20. The Jaguar Operational Conversion Unit (OCU), formed at Lossiemouth
in July 1974 from the nucleus of the Jaguar Conversion Team, now
trains
pilots for the operational squadrons and will shortly begin
post-graduate courses for Weapons Instructors and Instrument Rating
Examiners.
21. The air defence role has been transferred to the Phantom squad-
rons and the Lightning OCU closed on 30 September 1974; the Phantom
OCU is converting from ground attack to air defence training.
JOINT TRAINING
Tri-Service Training
22. The Ministry of Defence favours joint training where it is
practicable and economical. In some areas such as Automatic Data
Processing, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare, and Intelligence,
training is carried out jointly. The scope for its wider application
is severely limited, not least because of the need to employ existing
training resources to the maximum capacity and to avoid capital
expenditure on new facilities. The possibility of further joint
training is constantly under review, and it is intended to give close
attention to this subject following decisions on the Defence Review
Adventurous Training
23.
The tri-Service Adventurous Training programme instituted in
1971 has now become well established. It provides means by which
Servicemen can be faced with tests of courage, endurance and character
of a kind not otherwise readily available in peacetime.
European Collaboration
24. The matter of training in collaboration with our European part-
ners will be pursued in Eurogroup.
In Europe, joint training of
forward air controllers is already being successfully undertaken in
conjunction with the Federal Republic of Germany and discussions,
