Future Equipment

45. The new equipments due to enter service during the coming year

include the 105mm light gun; the Clansman range of combat net

radios; and the Blowpipe man-portable missile system for very-low-

level air defence of Chapter 17. Other equipments which are

expected to enter service in the coming year include:

a type 42 destroyer;

an additional Buccaneer squadron.

Work continues on a succession of new weapon systems to come

into service in the period up to the middle 1980s. Of outstanding

importance are HMS Invincible, the first of the new class of anti-

submarine cruisers, whose keel was laid in July 1973; a future main

battle tank, concept studies on which have been undertaken in

co-operation with the Federal Republic of Germany; and the Multi-Role

Combat Aircraft which has just entered a further stage of development

and is eventually expected to form about half the planned combat

front line of the Royal Air Force of Chapter 17. The Lance

tactical nuclear missile has been ordered from the United States.

Reinforcement and Mobilisation

47.

A thorough review of the United Kingdom's reinforcement and

mobilisation plans is being undertaken, and already a substantial

improvement in planned reaction times has been achieved.
