WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT WILLING TO LEAVE TROOPS IN HONG KONG AFTER THE DEFENCE REVIEW BUT NOT BRUNEI:

I have already explained why we

maintain & gerrison in Hong Kong.

The situation in Brunei, which is

not a dependency, is entirely

different.

SIZE OF GARRISON:

-

The Hong Kong Garrison consists of

five infantry battalions, en artillery

regiment, a squadron each of armoured

care and engineers, a frigate and patzel

boats, & aquadron of helicopters and

appropriate support. The total

strength is about 10,000.

WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO PROVIDE SHIFS AND HELICOPTERS AS WELL AS TROOPS?

The RN frigate and patrol craft

Daintain the freedom of the seas in

the area and provide assistence to:

the Marine Police. The helicopters

provide the Army and police with a

nobility which could not otherwise be

provided in the colony's more crowded

and more rugged areas.

CASE FOR LOCAL MILITIA OR GENDARMERIE:

We do not consider that it would be

commensurate with our constitutional

responsibilities for the Colony to

withdraw the garrison and rely on such

e fozce.
