CLOSURE OF 117 SIGNALS UNIT

41

I enclose for ease of reference further copies of the papers on this (viz Dawson's letter of 20 December and Thatcher's minute of 2 January) which Andrew Stuart gave to you last week.

I do not know, to what extent you are able to examine the future of 117 Signals Unit only, in isolation from the general Defence Review package. But it would be helpful to MOD (particularly in view of the need to inform the Americans) if you could let us know as soon as possible whether the Hong Kong Government can agree in principle to 117 Signals Unit's closure. MOD would then presumably be able to liaise direct with CBF on timing and other technical aspects.
