and NATO desire for continuation of certain facilities there,

make it unlikely that complete withdrawal will be possible

in the foreseeable future. The exact nature of any long-term

UK presence has still to be decided, and until this is done

no sensible planning for the rundown can be effected. However,

the RAF has already reduced its forces on the Island with the

aim of alleviating overcrowding in the WSBA..

Malta

21. The rundown and withdrawal of UK forces in Malta

between April 1977 and 31 March 1979 is the subject of a separate

study (10) and we do not consider it further in this paper 7.

West Indies

22.

Withdrawal of the two frigates the closure of No 1 JRS,

Nassau and the reduction of SNOWI's headquarters to that of ISCOM

BERMUDA can be achieved by the proposed date of 1 April 1976

without difficulty. No objection has been raised by any

interested nation and consultations have not proved necessary.

Continued use by the UK of the Altantic Undersea Test and

Evaluation Centre and the Air Force Eastern Test Range

facilities will be negotiated as part of the proposed new

Anglo/Bahamian Defence Agreement.
