Mauritius
17. No major problems are foreseen in meeting the proposed
withdrawal date of 1 April 1976. The need to relocate some
minor communications facilities on Diego Garcia is under study
Navy Dept please confirm. The Prime Minister of Mauritius who saw the Foreign Secretary (and briefly the Prime Minister)
during a visit to the UK in December for EEG talks on
sugar, appeared fairly relaxed about our withdrawal but professed
concern at how to keep the Russians out. It is not yet clear
whether he wishes to retain the UK/Mauritius Defence Agreement.
Oman
18. The withdrawal of UK forces providing direct assistance
in Oman is dependant upon the progress of the war there, and
we do not consider it further in this paper.
Masirah

Planning for the withdrawal of UK forces from Masirah
has not yet been authorised because of American reservations
on our intentions.
Cyprus
20. Although it continues to be HMG's aim to withdraw totally
