I am sending an interim reply to your letter of 1 Décenter to Christopher Roberts about the supply of equipment to the Hong Kong Folytechnic. We would certainly like to see the purchases made in Britain and wish the 600 Group every success. But the cscential point is whether HIG are prepared to make a grant and this is properly a decision for the FCO/CDM. It so happens that a meeting is being held this week to consider disposal of a 2,00,000 grant allocated to Hong Kong some 2 or 3 years ago and the application will be considered in this context. Frankly I am not sanguine about the outcome but this is to say FC0/ODM will be replying direct to Mr Shipman's letter and will keep you and me informed.
