Mr Ron Lewis (Carlisle): To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will make a statement on the progress and prospects of the Hong Kong Polytechnic.

Since the Polytechnic was inaugurated on 1 August 1972, it has expanded rapidly. Approved programme sassume a student enrolment of 7,000 in 1978, eventually rising to 8,000. Evening students at present number about 13,000 and will rise to 20,000 within 4
pronayle years. The Hong Kong Government have accepted capital commitments in principle up to HK$151.4m for new buildings.
