Despite the delays caused by gradual acquisition of staff in the department, the necessity to train new staff, and also the delay in the supply of some essential bibliographical tools, the total number of books ordered in the year (19,744) now approaches the projected target of 24,000 volumes to be ordered each year. Books are purchased from a variety of agents and publishers throughout the world, with a high percentage being obtained from Blackwell's Ltd. of Oxford.
The staff of the Book Acquisitions Section in July 1974 consisted of 3 professionals and 4 clerical staff.

The above serials were mainly selected by teaching staff and the Library's Reference Section. Of these, about 150 were received as donutions.
Most of the orders for overseas serials are now handled by a British commercial supplier who gives specialised services, while Hong Kong and South-east Asian publications are purchased through various local suppliers.
In July 1974 the Serials Section staff consisted of 2 professionals and 3 clerical staff.

The Cataloguing Section came into operation in December 1973 with the arrival of the Chief Cataloguer, Mr. W. Johnson. The above statistics, therefore, are for 1st December, 1973 to 31st July only.
