CONVENTION ON WETLANDS OF INTERNATIONAL IMPORTANCE ESPECIALLY AS WATERFOWL HABITAT

1. The above Convention was negotiated as an Internationa Conference in Ramsar, Iran in February 1971, in which HMG took an active part. The Convention was developed under t auspices of UNESCO and is intended primarily to safeguard wetland areas which are of particular importance as the home of wildfowl. Each signatory is required to declare a the time of signature at least one wetland area which they intend to conserve. The adoption of this Convention was recommended by the Stockholm Conference on the Human

Environment.

2. The United Kingdom signed the Convention subject to ratification on 6 September 1973 and designated 13 wetland of international importance (in the UK) The Convention had now been signed by 13 countries and ratified by 6. the terms of the Convention, ratification by 7 countries is required to bring it into force.
