During discussion Mr. Akers-Jones expressed concern whether sewage and insecticide tainted drainage water from the Tai Shang Wai Housing Estate would affect the viability of the project, since if these are likely to seriously effect the proposed project then it may well be a waste of effort to proceed any further. However, he said that it was a first class paper and he supported the scheme, subject to this one comment.

Professor Thrower replied that if the sewage treatment was of the same type specified for Shatin New Town, which was in fact proposed, then he was of the opinion that there would be no serious effect on the Wildfowl Park project. He also added that domestic spraying of insecticide to control mosquitoes would probably not be a problem but that agricultural spraying might be.

Mr. Melville added that from his experience in the Mai Po Marshes, both during the day and night, he has not yet been bitten by mosquitoes.

The Chairman informed members that Mr. Webster of the Conservanpy Association had asked for a copy of the report, ostensibly with a view to obtaining financial assistance from other sources to help finance the project.

4.13 Mr. Armstrong-Wright added that an international bird preservation society was interested in financing such a project on condition that the Government dropped the housing development at Tai Shang Wai.

Mr. Akers-Jones said that initially the Government should finance the project from recreational funds; however if this was found to be impossible, then, the obtaining of funds from other sources should be considered.
