If access from the estate to the marsh is restricted by the erection of a barrier it would go some way towards helping to conserve the remainder of the marsh. However, we feel that it would not be possible for a Nature Reserve and an extremely congested housing estate for 30,000 people to exist side by side.

If a plan is prepared for a Nature Reserve on the Mai Po Marshes, and a guarantee given that the surrounding area will be protected from further development, the I.C.B.P. will willingly approach certain international organisations with which we have links, in order to secure financial aid. But naturally success in so doing would depend very much on the nature of the proposal.

We would like to emphasise that we should be glad to give all the constructive help we can to save this area of international importance.

I am, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

Professor Jean Dorst,
