Scope of Social Insurance Schemes in Selected Asian Countries

Persons Protected
Employees of establishments with 5 or more workers in industry and commerce, and those in other specified undertakings.
Workers in factories and mines having at least 100 employees, workers in large trans- portation, communications and construction undertakings, and also public employees.
For the social insurance scheme run by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation, employees in factories with 20 or more workers and using power. For the Family Pension Scheme, which is operated by the Employees' Provident Fund, employees in firms with 20 or more workers (after 240 days employment with the same employer).
Employees in industry and commerce.
Employees in commercial and industrial establishments with 5 or more workers.
Employees in establishments with 10 or more workers (domestic workers entitled to medical care through their employers).
Persons Specifically Excluded
Permanent public servants.
For the social insurance scheme, employees earning more than 500 rupees a month, and workers in seasonal factories, commerce and agriculture. For the Employees' Provident Fund, employees earning more than 1,000 rupees per month or covered by equivalent private plans.
Agricultural, domestic and casual employees.
Persons with earnings of $500 or more per month (they remain members of the Invalidity Pension Scheme if earnings exceed limit after joining); in respect of invalidity, if over 50 at date of application of the Scheme or at age 55 certain agricultural and domestic workers and fishermen.
Employees earning over 500 rupees per month. Persons in the service of the State includ- ing members of the Armed Forces, Police Force and Railway employees.
