I hope you had a better Christmas than we did! Both of
us had a really nasty boat of 'flu and missed all the usual festivities by being in bed. To make matters worse, we are without a servant, so had to take it in turns to totter out to make tea, heat a can of soup and the like. Any way, we are both up and about now although feeling a bit groggy •

For some time I have been endeavouring to ascertain the official policy towards paragraph 5 of Sir Duncan Watson's letter to H.E. of 8th August. Eventually, in a somewhat oblique manner, informed early in December that I should raise with you the question of Dr. W.R. McCarthy's academic research. Incidentally, is he the McCarthy who very recently received a life peerage? We are not too clear at this end precisely what information is alleged to be lacking at present and which should therefore, apparently, be the subject of the proposed low profile study. Perhaps as a first step you could clarify this basic point and at the same time provide some preliminary details of how he would propose to go about the project.

The publication of the Apprenticeship Bill has caused no public comment at all. I move the adjournment of the second reading on 7th January. Perhaps that may create some interest before the resumption of the second reading on 21st January.
