BRIGADIER J WHITEHEAD MBE

COMMANDER 48 GURKHA INFANTRY BRIGADE

Brigadier John Whitehead was commissioned into the Indian

Army from the Officers Training School Bangalore in 1946 and

joined the 1st King George V's Own Gurkha Rifles in Northern

India. He stayed with them until the end of 1967 when due to

the break-up of the Indian Army he transferred to the British

Army and the 1st Battalion 7th Gurkha Rifles in Rangoon.

He saw active service with his Battalion from 1948 until

1959 in the Malaya Emergency with a two year break for

recruiting.

He also saw active service in Borneo in 1964.

He attended the Staff College in 1960 and was promoted Lt Col

to command 1/6 Gurkha Rifles in 1968. In 1969 he became GS01

Ops and Plans in HQ Allied Forces Central Europe and in

August 1971 he rejoined the Brigade of Gurkhas as Brigade

Colonel. He was promoted to command 48 Gurkha Infantry

Brigade in March 1973.

His wife's name is Jenny, their daughter is aged 12.

Both he and his wife are keen golfers.
