Are relations with the People's Republic of China likely to remain stable?

(c) Would FCO explain why refugees are being sent

back to China?

(a)

Why not enlarge the Legislative Council? The creation of more unofficial seats would enable more officials to be appointed and thus more Hong Kong Government Departments could be represented.

Cyprus

When I challenged Mr Millar on his Sub-Committee's need to ask about the future constitution of Cyprus and the territorial integrity of the SBA's, he told me that he had now deleted them from his brief. The former would be omitted, and the latter would be directed to the Ministry of Defence, not to the FCC. But nevertheless he could not guarantee that questions on these subjects would not be asked of FCO officials, too. That left the following questions:

(a) What is being done to secure compensation from

the Turks for British Government property in the Turkish controlled area?

(b)

(c)

Are the claims (e.g. Famagusta NAAFI cold store, DA's house etc) being treated on the same basis as individual private claims?

What representations have been made to achieve freedom of movement of diplomatic staff throughout the Island?

(a) Are the British Government prepared to run Nicosia

airport if the Turks and Greeks cannot agree between themselves to do so? What steps are being tden to release aircraft?

(e) What action can be taken to release from Episcopi

WSBA Turkish goods impounded there? What, if any,

is the UN involvement?

(f) What is the current annual cost in cash and kind of

the UK contribution to UNFICYP?

(g) Are FCO staff treated differently from Servicemen

as far as standards of accommodation are concerned, in particular with regard to air-conditioning ? (The Committee commented, during their visit, that Diplomatic Service staff do not get air-conditioned bedrooms, whereas Servicemen do!)
