1. I attach a copy of the transcript of the first session of evidence given to the Defence and External Affairs Sub Committee on 9 December 1975.

I should be grateful if you would read through the evidence given by the Minister of State and yourself and identify any which is unsuitable for publication. I should also be gratef il if you would clear any proposals for sidelining with Minister of State's office before returning the transcript to me for onward transmission to the House.

As you are aware it is only necessary at this stage to check the evidence as regards its security classification. he will be able, at the proof stage, to correct misspellings, misquotations, factual inaccuracies and so on.

I understand that the Sub Committee is hoping to publish a report on its visit to Hong Kong and Cyprus towards the end of January 1976 and, to meet this timescale, requires the early return of the transcript. It would be helpful, therefore, if you could aim to return it to me by 2 January or as soon after as possible.
