Thank you for your letter of 28 January. I have also seen a copy of your letter to Eddie Tomkins of 30 January.

While there is a faint risk that those people who are determined to regard Hong Kong as a sweat-shop colony might comment unfavourably on your presence in London to help sell Hong Kong goods, I do not think you should be swayed by this. We therefore agree to your visits to London and Paris (which we assume will be at the expense of the Hong Kong Government).

Andrew Stuart is in touch with Kensington Palace about the proposal that Princess Alexandra should be your guest of honour on 10 April. Apparently there is a problem as the Princess has another engagement on that day. Her Lady in Waiting has promised us further news this week which we will telegraph to you.

Your visit will obviously have the added advantage of follow up talks in the Office in the wake of Lord Goronwy- Roberts' visit and in preparation for the Queen's Visit. We will lay on appropriate meetings nearer the time.
