I should be grateful for your advice about and indeed your approval of, the dates of my forthcoming leave.

I have not taken normal summer leave because at the time it was necessary to decide there was no assurance that the economy would not continue to deteriorate with the consequent risk of excessive unemployment and the need for Government intervention if disturbances were to be avoided during the summer. Naturally with such a possibility I did not wish to plan to be absent. However I think we have now touched bottom, and though things continue to be difficult and belts to be rather tight, and though I expect recovery to be slow and patchy, the anxiety of a deteriorating situation is no longer here and I see no reason to postpone leave further.

In these circumstances I have been planning to leave as soon as the Official replies have been made in the debate on my address to Leg. Co. This will be on the afternoon of Thursday, November 6th, and I plan to leave that night.
