Dear Jenny,
I am very pleased that the International Committee has decided to take up Jim Callaghan's suggestion of a meeting with the Governor of Hong Kong.
A similar offer was made to the Foreign Affairs Group of the Parliamentary Party, and it has now been arranged that the Governor will speak to the Group in the
It House of Commons at 5 p.m. on Thursday 4 December. occurred to Jim Callaghan that since the Governor's time in London is limited, and the International Committee and the Foreign Affairs Group want to cover almost identical ground, (It would also have the that a joint meeting could be held. advantage of ensuring a more respectable turn out for the Governor.) According to Stuart Hercock, the Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Group, they would be happy to go along
I hope with this suggestion and hold such a joint meeting. that the International Committee would be able to agree.
I also welcome your suggestion that the Department would let the Governor have a short note in advance about the major points to be discussed. I am sure this will help him in giving the Committees as full a picture as possible about the present situation in Hong Kong.
Best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
