Food Hygiene (Adeline C,C. Kay, Senior Public Health Inspector)

This was another interesting session but the tight schedule left little time for questions. However, a folder was provided giving a comprehensive range of food hygiene publications, information leaflets and posters (some in Chinese for the restaurant trade) etc,

The Food Hygiene (General) Regulations, 1970 provide the legal basis for consumer protection through a high standard of public hygiene, In Westminster there are 6000 premises which are covered by the Health Inspectorate, including :-

735 hotels

90 schools and hostels

1600 restaurants/snack bars 1500 retail stores 1400 clubs

570 public houses

18 food preparation premises 60 food wholesale premises

The Department has an establishment of 82 (30 vacancies) including 7 inspectors of premises and 4 inspectors for food control. There are no registration procedures for restaurants and they become liable for WCC inspection only after applica-
