The Star Ferry Company Limited operates a passenger ferry service across the harbour. The company uses 10 vessels on the service with a total passenger carrying capacity of over 5, 640. Each day some 152, 000 passengers are carried.

The Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company Limited operates 11 passenger routes and two vehicular ferry routes across the harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. The company also operates seven routes to various parts of the New Territories including outlying islands.

The company operates a fleet of 60 vessels, 14 of which are vehicular, together with four triple-deck vessels operating cross-harbour services. Two fibreglass launches were introduced in 1973 for fast mini-ferry services. The company carries an average of 466,000 passengers and 16, 500 vehicles daily.

The hub of the British Rail system serving London and the South East and important national services. These spread out from the 16 main line termini and cover 477 route miles in Greater London. On this are situated 330 railway stations and during the morning peak period British Rail commuter trains reach these termini bringing in workers from Greater London, the rest of the South East Region and beyond.

The section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway that runs from the southern end of the Kowloon peninsula to the Chinese frontier at Lo Wu is owned by the Hong Kong Government. Since 1949, passengers have had to change trains at Lo Wu and walk 300 yards between the two terminals, but mail and freight travel through direct to the Chinese railway system without transhipment.

There are 17 daily passenger trains each way operating on the Hong Kong section, and an average of six goods trains a day. Passenger traffic is heavy at weekends and on public holidays. Some 30,000 passengers and 3, 100 tons of freight are carried each day on average.

Of the total London road network of 7, 830 miles (ranging from national motorways to narrow cul de sacs and occuping 11% of London's surface area), the GLC is the highway authority for about 560 miles of metropolitan principal roads and will take over about 310 miles
