1 Passports

TAVIO ANU INFORMATION

All visitors to Hong Kong must hold valid travel documents, endorsed where necessary for Hong Kong. Effective 1st April 1972, holders of British passports issued in the U.K. will be allowed to come to Hong Kong for a period of six months after which time they must obtain the permission of the Immigration Department to stay. Exemptions are those British passport holders who have been resident for seven years or more in Hong Kong, or who have married residents in that category,

2 Visas

(a) Not required for holders of U.K. passports issued in the U.K. of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, (including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.)

(b) In addition:

(i) British subjects and Commonwealth citizens and nationals of the following countries do not require visas for a stay as a visitor not excceding three months:

Andorra, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Israel, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Hebrides- { Anglo-French-Condominium, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey.

(ii) Nationals of the following countries do not require a visa for a stay not exceeding one month:

Argentina, Austria, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Finland, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras. Iceland, Iran, Maldive Islands, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Tunisia, United States of America, Uruguay, Venezuela. West Germany, Western Samoa, provided that onward or return tickets by sea or air are held, and they have adequate means of support for their stay in the Colony. (They are not allowed to take up employment during their visit).

(c) In all other cases visas are required (with the exception of those visitors covered by Section 3 of this Manual).

(d) Application for visas for Hong Kong should be made to the nearest British Embassy or Consulate or to the Immigration Department, Hong Kong.

(e) Cost: from 40 n.p. to £4.35 according to nationality of passport held.

(f) When making application for a visa it is generally required to give at least one month's notice. However, it is advisable for the nationals of some countries to give even longer notice. In the event of uncertainty always check with U.K. Passport Office or British Consulate or Immigration

(g) Persons, aside from those included in (a), wishing to enter Hong Kong, with their dependents, for employment, residence, or study, must always submit their applications for entry visas to the nearest British Embassy, Consulate, or High Commission.

3 Transit Visas

(a) Required for visitors not included in sections 1 and 2 above arriving by air or sea in transit for the People's Republic of China or Macau.

(b) Transit visitors not included in 1, 2, and 3 above do not require transit visas provided they conform to the following regulations:

Arrivals by air:

(i) An onward booking is held.

(ii) Valid documents for country of destigation are held. (iii) Stay in Hong Kong is not more than 7 days. Arrivals by sea :

For duration of ship's stay in port, providing:

(i) Onward or return bookings are held for the same vessel.

(ii) Valid documents for country of destination are held. (iii) The carrier accepts responsibility for the removal of the passengers at the earliest opportunity.

Air/sea and seafair transits:

Not required under conditions listed above.

Note:

The concessions listed above do not apply to the nationals of Albania, Bulgaria, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Mongolia, North Korea, Poland, Rumania, Vietnam and the Soviet Union nor to stateless persons and nationals of the People's Republic of China, for whom visas are always required.

4 Customs

(a) Visitors may bring into Hong Kong free of duty; Tobacco – 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 4 lb, tobacco, Liquor - one quart bottle.

Cosmetics -- cosmetics containing alcohol (perfume, lotions, etc.) in opened bottles in reasonable quantities,

(b) Gold (other than personal jewellery) and firearms (personal property such as rifles, revolvers, etc.) must be declared and handed into custody until departure.

(c). Dutiable goods: tobacco, liquor, hydrocarbon oils, methyl alcohol, and table waters,

(d) Visitors may bring in their cars for personal use, free from duty. A valid International Driving Permit issued in the country of origin is required by all visitors who wish to drive in Hong Kong. A motor vehicle insurance policy (third party risks) is also required.
