You ref. T.C. 92/72
Dear Mr. Scott,
25 South Street,
St.Andrews,
Fife.
6th March 1974.
W/41 I
Thank you for sending me a copy of your letter of 21st January. As you surmised, the original has not reached me; I sus- pect that my re-directed Hong Kong mail is proceeding by sea.
I note the condition in paragraph 3 of your letter.
I realise, of course, the importance of public appearances and the identification in much of the public mind of Jardine Fleming with Jardine Matheson. I might, however, make the point that Jardine Flon- ing's part in the Underground Railway project so far has been confined to the problem of financing it, as advisers to the Japanese consortium, and that further activity, if any, is likely to be similarily confined. The negotiaition of the contract is a matter in whcich Jardine Matheson only are involved. I accept, of course the condition but it is not impossible that Jardine Fleming might wish to employ me on the financial aspects before the signing of the a contract for the first stage, in a manner which might be beneficial to the project. If, in my opinion, this situation arises, I shall, if I may, approach you again.
I give the undertaking required by your paragraph 4.
Yours sincerely
Com
