Proposals in the draft White Paper
The qualifications for acceptance as a student nurse
(in respect of requiring two science subjects amongst the subjects passed in candidates' General Certificate of Education Examinations) might well be relaxed (paragraph 83).
Incremental credit be awarded to nurses for approved post- registration qualifications and for approved previous experience (paragraph 84).
A school be established to produce dental nurses, as a first step towards giving dental care to schoolchildrer (paragraphs 86-90).
Plans should be made for a dental school starting with a pre-clinical annual intake of at least 40, and with an annual output of about 60 dentists from 1980 onwards (paragraphs 103-105).
Consideration be given to the question whether the agencies should be encouraged by Government to continue the experiment, and whether the service should be expanded (paragraphs 109-111).
To reduce the number of occupational accidents and traffic accidents, vigorous publicity campaigns be instituted on these two subjects (paragraphs 119 and 120).
The question of relaxing the mandatory requirement of two science subjects for student nurses is now being considered by a nursing adviser from the United Kingdom who has come to Hong Kong to review various aspects of the training of student nurses. The report on this review should be available within a few months (paragraph 10.4).
The award of incremental credit has been approved for relevant past experience. The question of incremental credit for post-registration qualification is being pursued separately and is expected to be the subject of an early announcement (paragraph 10.5).
A school dental service will be introduced, with an annual charge of $5 being made (paragraph 11.8).
A dental school will be established at the University of Hong Kong with a pre-clinical intake of at least 40 and an annual output rising to about 60 dentists (paragraphs 11.4 and 11.16).
The possibility of introducing community nursing will be kept under review (paragraph 12.17).
Action will be taken to increase public awareness of the need to reduce accidents of all kinds (paragraphs 12.9 and 12.10).
