ratio of 6.1 is two and a half times the recommended U.K. norm. For planning purposes an overall ratio of 4.0 has been chosen as more appropriate.
(g) Geriatrics provision is not made separately at present. For
planning purposes a ratio of one nurse to 2.5 beds is assumed.

The above ratios for medical and surgical beds are for the current mixture of acute and non-acute (mostly acute) cases in Government hospitals. For non-acute beds only, the ratio for general medical and surgical could be increased from 2.2 and 1.8 respectively to 3.0 beds per nurse. Similarly, a ratio of 3 beds per nurse would be suitable for day-beds if any of these are provided.
73. Planning ratios for nurses in clinics are assumed to be the existing ratios (paragraph 70) which, generally speaking, are satisfactory.
74. Future needs for the Medical and Health Department can then be calculated, using the above planning ratios and the forecast require- ments for Government hospital beds (see Appendix 2) and doctors in clinics (see paragraph 60) as follows:
32
75. The combined totals for Government hospitals and clinics are therefore:
