facilities appropriate to their ailments;

to ensure, at a time when there is increasing

pressure on hospital beds, that the maximum

use is made of every available facility; and

to improve the accident service.

In proposing uniform charges for the

hospitals in the scheme the MDAC considered that it

would be appropriate to make some increase in the

charges presently made in Government hospitals. The

present daily maintenance charge which was instituted

in 1961 represents a very substantial subsidy to the

patient; it does not even cover the cost of food. The

Committee recommended there should be a two-stage

increase for third class Government hospital

beds

initially from $2 to $3 a day and then to
