Thik you for your letters of 29 December and 4 January.
I had been expecting that the Americans might suggest that the meeting at Geneva would be a suitable occasion for us to continue our discussions about the Anglo/US/ Hong Kong exercise, so it came as no surprise that they had raised the matter with you. I have not yet had a direct approach from them in London but I knew from Harvey sellman that Mr Bartels would be at Geneva. I have had a word with Andrew Stuart and we have agreed that once the issues relating to the proposals for the Ad Hoc Committee for the Far East have been considered by the Commission the way will be open for us to discuss the Anglo/US/Hong Kong arrangements with the Americans more fully. Me are therefore in principle not at all adverse to their likely proposal. I look forward to receiving your ideas about the form the tripartite machinery should take and about basic ground rules.
I am glad that you have been able to accept the invitation to be an adviser in the United Kingdom delegation. I shall put in hand arrangements for our accommodation as soon as possible. I look forward to meeting you in Geneva and talking with you again.
Yours sincerely
C J TRAIN
