Vacancies for 1 Senior Puisne Judge
and 1 Puisne Judge, Judiciary
I have the honour to inform you that the
office of Senior Puisne Judge is vacant, as a result of the departure on pre-retirement leave of
Sir Alastair Blair-Kerr with effect from
14th December 1973. On the advice of the Chief Justice,
I recommend that this vacancy be filled by the
promotion of Mr. W. F. Pickering, Puisne Judge.
The post of Senior Puisne Judge is normally filled by the promotion of a Puisne Judge. The holder acts as Chief Justice during the substantive holder's absence on leave, but otherwise the duties and the salary are the same as those of a Puisne Judge.
Mr. Pickering, born on 4th December 1915, is 58 years of age. His qualifications are LL.B. (Manchester University), 1937, and Barrister-at-Law, Gray's Inn, 1963. He was appointed as a Magistrate on 19th August 1955 and was promoted to Senior Magistrate on 1st July 1949, District Judge on 27th July 1962 and Puisne Judge on 10th June 1970. He acted as Senior Puisne Judge from 27th July 1973 to 9th August 1973. He is older than the other Puisne Judges (except Mr. Justice J.P. Trainor) is a mature and well-balanced person and a distinguished and fair-minded Judge. If promoted to Senior Puisne Judge, he could act adequately as Chief Justice during the latter's absence. Although third in seniority
