District Judges Form of Address

Would you please refer to previous correspondence on

the above subject, resting with your Saving Despatch No. 569 dated

31st Decemb er 1969.

2.

Successive Chief Justices have proposed, in 1953, 1959

and 1969 that District Judges in Hong Kong should be accorded

the title of "His Honour", on all official occasions outside court.

The proposal has again been raised, this time by the

3.

present Chief Justice.

4.

My opinion remains the same as before. I believe

that the courtesy address of "Your Honour" used in court is a

proper and sufficient recognition of the office of District Judge.

Outside court I believe that it is sufficient to refer

5.

to them as "District Judges" without any further prefix.

6.

My views are shared by the Attorney General.

7.

In these circumstances, I would be grateful if you

would agree that I should inform the Chief Justice that your

views have not changed since your Saving Despatch No. 569.
